"Painting In Acrylics  -  Basic Materials"

A fifteen minute Video, where I cover the basic materials I consider as both essentail and optional to getting started with the Acrylic paint medium.  I show you my choice of ideal starter colours, explain the best brushes, palettes and other items I suggest using to help you get started with this popular painting medium. If feed back is positive to my presentation style and content, I plan to create and publish a series of short 'how to' videoes in the coming weeks & months

1:- Acrylic Colours -

Daler Rowney System 3 / (Or Winsor & Newton)

  • 009 - Titanium White   (White = 150ml Tube)
  • 651 - Lemon Yellow   (12 x Colours = 59ml Tube)
  • 634 - Naples Yellow
  • 619 - Cadmium Orange
  • 221 - Burnt Sienna
  • 223 - Burnt Umber
  • 247 - Raw Umber
  • 543 - Crimson
  • 418 - Velvet Purple
  • 123 - Ultramearine Blue
  • 112 - Coeruleum Blue Hue
  • 355 - Leaf Green
  • 352 - Hookers Green
  • Black (Optional) - black not really needed 


2:- Brushes

A small selection (5 brushes) of 'Flat' Synthetic Bristle Brushes, Short or Long Handle (I prefer Short)

Choose from the following Manufacturers 

  • Royal & Langnickel Brushes
    • 5 Piece Flat Brush Set = Code - SG-304
  • Daler Rowney - 'Graduate' Range
    • Size = 1 Inch       Flat Wash
    • Size = 3/4 Inch   Flat Wash

  • Winsor & Newton 'Foundation' Acrylic Brushes
    • Set BWF007
    • Size 3 & 6 Flat
    • 10 & 14 Filbert 


3:- Acrylic (Stay Wet) Palette
  • Daler Rowney "Staywet Palette' Small starter Pack Staywet Palette - includes 3 x Reservoirs & x 12 Membranes Refill Pack (Optional)

4:- Water Spray / Mister
  • From the local Chemist or Art Supplies Shop
  • An old recycled cleaning fluid spary bottle will do
5:- Acrylic Paper Pad  
  • A3 Size - 20 Sheets / Canvas Textured Daler Rowney   or   Winsor & Newton
  • Stiff Piece of Card  larger than the A3 Pad Size
  • To use as a drawing board, to hold your sheet on paper








6:-  Sticky Tape - Low Tack 
  • Low Tack Decorators Tape / Lining Tape / 1" Wide
  • Masking tape will do - Just be very careful removing


7:- Water Soluable Colour Pencils x 2 
  • Derwent Watercolour 
  • Caran D'Ache
  • Faber Castell 
    • Try and buy just 2 pencils!
      • Dark Brown & Dark Blue are ideal                  (An art Supply Shop, will sell individual pencils)
    • HB pencil
    • Eraser


8:- Water Containers
  • 3 x Jars / Large Yoghurt Pots
    • To Store Brushes
    • Clean Water to Thin Paint
    • Water to claen Brushes
    • A large (empty Fabric Conditoner) Bottle to hold a supply of clean water to avoid trips to the tap
9:- Brush Cleaner
  • Bar of household bar of soap
  • Or Washing Up Liquid
10:- Paper Towelling
11:- Steel Ruler
  • 24" Steel (Or Plastic) Ruler   
  • for creating scaling grids
  • Painting straight edges, such as horizon lines
12:- Lighting (Daylight Bulb) 
(Optional) but highly recommended
  • Good lighting is essential when painting
  • Recommend using a "Daylight Bulb"
  • Provides the correct colour temperature
  • uy one for your existing tasklight if you can
    • Google "Daylight Bulb" 
    • Check for your light fitting type/size etc
13:- Desktop Easil 
(Optional) but highly recommended
  • Good posture when painting is important when painting
  • Google "Desktop Easil"
  • Winsor & Newton
